Now that wasn't something I found in my research - they mentioned the bed breaking but didn't mention who. Very unprofessional of me to assume that CoC and DT did it (though can you blame me, as much as they were bouncing up and down on it)? I'll correct that in the article, and thank you for the information!
I’m probably misremembering but I think they mentioned this on air during the show as the reason that British Gas had placed the bit. If I remember I will try to listen to the mp3s I have of it. :)
There apparently was a sign on the bed 'Prone to collapse' but that might have been a joke.
According to Dean from British Gas:
- 10 people from British Gas sat/stood on the bed.
- And it was okay until Christian jumped on the bed while they were sitting/standing on it.
Link to all the MP3s of those 3 days that David was on the show in November 2009 if you want to have a listen. It's not the full 4 hours for each day but only the sections where David spoke. Which is still a lot! ;)
Ah ha! I could've sworn I remembered ~something~ about CoC being involved with the bed breaking, and these are the links I needed. I'll have a listen later on today after I get off work, and correct the post as needed. Thanks for your diligence! :D
I still remember when the whole bed thing was going down back in the day. Though, I'm pretty sure it was actually broken by British Gas themselves, at their own drunken party in the radio studio later that night (which made them even more beholden to buy it because of the whoopsie), not by Christian and David being on it that day on the radio. At least that was the gossip at the time! (Though the bed was literally on it's last legs though, so who knows!) 😆
Thank you! You and McBash chimed in to correct me about who broke the bed - sadly, I wasn't a fan at the time and didn't know the "rest of the story", as they say. So lacking detail, I (unprofessionally but probably not surprisingly) assumed CoC and DT did it, given they were bouncing up and down on it so much during the broadcast. :D Anyway, I appreciate the added information, and I've corrected it in the article - and given you the props for doing so.
Of course! I just always remember it, because it was so surreal at the time! And, of course, many of us in fandom were joking about buying the bed ourselves (though it looked like it'd definitely been through the war -- especially the headboard being all bent up)! I think there was an article back then about British Gas breaking it at a party, but yeah, it was all pretty wild!
How adorable was the radio/video (Jedward! I know them from some of the game shows I watch). Amazing how much his shoes and clothing brought in for a good cause. He is just the best!
I love this entire post and am marveling at how the people “in the know” have chimed in with their recollections and information on all of the post’s details!
In that same auction I think was another item of clothing from LLL. I just remember seeing a picture of the child (of the person who won it) wearing it. And my memory gets even more vague here as I think the item in question was never worn on stage by David because he only would have worn it if he was a stand-in for another role in the play??
I've put all the previously posted replies into one reply :).
I found a link with some info on it! Turns out it's not an auction but a sale. So that likely why you didn't mention it. But it might be interesting for other people? :)
Also the bed was broken by a huge amount of people from British Gas sitting on it at the same time. That is why they decided to bid on it.

I have done my 'research' and you might still also be right about CoC causing the damage to the bed ;).

I am not affiliated with that website in any way, by the way. :D

Yay for crowdsourcing DT fandom!

I wonder if his DNA was still on the bed 👀
My oracle would say, "Yes."

Big thumbs up for crowdsourcing fan info!
That is a very funny story ... Thank you! Including the comments! But the bed was really done for.
Funny. I always wondered where that bed ended up. Nice to know the ending. Thanks as always. You are excellent.
I’m pretty sure an item of clothing for R&J has also been put up for auction a long time ago. I think it was the white shirt or coat.

An article mentioning his slippers also being on sale and more info on the LLL coat:

I still can't find anything on the R&J shirt.
These are fantastic links, and I'm sure everyone will love the added information. Thanks!
