Wow! I've been a DT fan for a long time but had never managed to come across that particular clip! Thanks so very much for sharing the out-of-focus-fleeting full-frontal. :)

Thanks too for the mention & link to my (ancient) Tumblr post! Like you, I'd wondered about the choice of photos released for this production, and wished there was one of DT in the bellboy costume (I've seen blurry photos of some) and a nicer one with DT & Richard Wilson in the same frame.

Back when I was on my quest to watch some of DT's early theatre work whenever I found myself in the UK, friends had warned me away from this one for reasons similar to what you've mentioned here. I still may do it someday if I run out of other productions to see.

Thank you again!!! As always, what an excellent write-up!

I'm glad I could share a clip you hadn't seen - I didn't figure it made the rounds too much. I wish I could remember where I found it, but it's been over a decade now and back then I wasn't as good at writing sources down...so que sera, sera!

I've seen quite a few photos from the production where they're housed at the NT Archive. Though there were a few of David wearing the full policeman's costume - and a few more of him in just his boxers - I don't recall seeing any with him in the bellboy suit. I do vaguely remember seeing him wearing it in the play itself. The only still photos I've seen with the bellboy's costume were the ones taken when Debra Gillett was wearing it. And as popular as Richard Wilson was at the time, you'd think there would have been LOADS of photos taken. And there were - of him, mostly alone. Grrrr. Oh, to go back in time!

I loved your ancient Tumblr post...super glad you'd captured the conversation David had with Christian. And I'm glad you enjoyed the write-up!

Love it. It's nice to think back to his early plays and your writing takes us to it in our own little time capsule. Thank you.

Oh yes! Still is pretty skinny for his age - he must have an awesome metabolism (wish I had one like his, lol)!
